Classroom Programs

These programs are a great option for educators who are looking to expand on the theme of recycling and reusing. All programs are available for custom changes.

Story Time with Shady:                                                                                   

The author will read the story "Rascal and Shady Recycle and Reuse" to the children. Then Shady will be on hand to greet the children! Afterwards, the author and Shady can autograph any of the books that had been purchased.
                                                                                                                 Time: 15 min.

The Writers Block:

 This is all about the writing process! The Writers Block is a time of question and answers with the author. She will talk about the writing process in relavent/age appropriate terms. To be an author you really have to practice your storytelling. For an additional 20min. we will, as a group, work on writing a fun story to read as a group. 

                                                                 Time: 40 min. Group writing: +20 min.

Craft Time With Rascal and Shady:

K-2nd: This is all about the fun! The author will read "Rascal and Shady Recycle and Reuse". Then, get the creative juices flowing by reusing everyday items for fun and creative crafts! This requires collecting materials ahead of time. 
                                                                                                                                                                                                                   Time: 30 min.

3rd-5th:Armed with a box full of recyclable goodies, the children will pick an item from the box to utilize in a creative way. They can either make something crafty, or write a short story and incorporating that item.

Rascal and Shady Show-n-tell:

Author will read the book "Rascal and Shady Recycle and Reuse". She will discuss what it means to recycle and reuse and how the children can participate at home. Then it is time for some fun show-n-tell. She will bring original items, and the new items they have become. This is a bit of a guessing game for the kids, which is fun! They will see how everyday "trash" can be turned into fun, functional, beautiful, useful items that we may not easily recognize.
                                                                                                                          Time: 20 min.

Community Helpers:

Here is a great opportunity to give back to your community! Author will read "Rascal and Shady Recycle and Reuse". Shady will present the kids with a "gift", which is simply a plastic bag! Then Shady will encourage the kids to go out on the playground, trails, fields, or their backyard and fill it with trash.
